Registering Domains
Registering a domain through FastNet is easy, simply think of the domain name you’d like to use and get in touch with us. Either speak to your account manager or a member of our sales team by calling 01273 688088 and we’ll check the availability of the domain name and fill you in with any details you may need to know before you register.
Managing Your DNS Records and Zones
Domains use a DNS zone to point services such as email to different servers. A DNS zone must contain DNS records and each record specifies a location that a subdomain can go.
If you do not have direct access to your DNS records, please send an email to help@fastnet.co.uk with the changes you want made or requesting access to a control panel where you can make the changes yourself.
Your MyDNS Control Panel
Once you have the credentials to your MyDNS control panel, you’ll need to login using the following link and enter your username and password: https://mydns.fast.net.uk/
If we previously managed your DNS records and have since transferred it over to our MyDNS control panel, you will find your zone file or files waiting for you, with the records intact from their last change.
Modifying an existing record
To modify an existing record, simply find the record you wish to modify on the list of records and click the modify button, displayed as a pencil and paper icon, on the right-hand column titled ‘M’ (modify).
Adding a record
Adding a new record to a domain’s zone, click on the domain from the list of zones then click the ‘Add New Record’ button. On the next screen, select the record type from the list, then enter the desired subdomain in the ‘DNS zone name’ field. The bottommost field, ‘Name server’ is where you would like this record to point to.
Adding a new zone
Adding a new zone is not too dissimilar to adding a new DNS record, simply click the ‘Add DNS Zones’ button on the main screen to proceed to the configuration screen. On the configuration screen you’ll first need to enter the DNS zone name, which will be the domain name (EG: domain.co.uk) and there you can then choose a DNS Zone template (Standard Forward Template is recommended). DNS zone type should be kept on ‘Master’ and DNS zone transfer should be left unchecked.
Deleting zones and records
To delete a zone, go to the DNS Zones view and then check the box to the far right of the zone you want to delete. Then click on the ‘remove selected’ link at the top of the column. Confirm your decision on the next screen and then the zone will be deleted. The same process can be used to delete records from the DNS records view.
Importing an existing zone file
If you have exported your DNS zone file from another source, you can import this into the MyDNS portal by clicking ‘Add DNS Zones’ button on the main screen and then clicking on the ‘Add DNS zones from file’ button. From the next screen you can browse the local machine for an exported DNS zone file in formats such as .rtf (Rich Text Format).
Backing up zones
You can back up your DNS zones and records by using the ‘Backup DNS zones’ button on the main DNS Zones view page. All you need to do is simply click the button, all of the zones and records will be backed up and you’ll receive a download prompt to store the file. You can recover this backed up file in the event of emergency by clicking on ‘Add DNS zones’ > ‘Full zones from file’ and then selecting the backed up folder. To avoid any conflicting zones, it is advisable to remove all zones before performing this.
Global Operations
Global operations can be used to perform bulk actions against any or all DNS records in a zone file if they match certain rules. You can do this by going to the DNS Zones view, selecting the zone or zones using their checkboxes on the far right of the page and then clicking on the ‘Global operations’ link at the top of the column.
