How to connect your router for the first time

The steps for connecting your router for the first time will depend on the type of service you have, such as ADSL, FTTC, FTTP, or a leased line.

Broadband Connections: ADSL, FTTC & FTTP

For ADSL, FTTC, and FTTP connections, we currently supply Zyxel DX3301-T0 routers as standard.

For ADSL or FTTC services, the router will usually connect to a telephone socket using the supplied DSL cable. Your socket may already be pre-filtered. If it is not, a DSL filter is included in the router box and should be connected between the telephone socket and the DSL cable.

For FTTP services, the router will usually connect to the ONT installed at your premises. This is normally done using an Ethernet cable from the ONT to the router’s WAN port.

The router has four LAN ports, which can be used to connect devices such as computers, switches, firewalls, or other network equipment.

If wireless has been requested as part of your service, the Wi-Fi details will usually be preconfigured before the router is sent to you.

Leased Line Connections

For leased line services, we currently supply a Cisco 1117-4P router as standard.

The Cisco router has two WAN ports in the middle of the device:

  • One SFP WAN port
  • One Ethernet WAN port

The appropriate WAN port should be connected to the access port on the NTE provided by the carrier. The NTE is the network termination equipment installed as part of your leased line service.

The Cisco router also has four LAN ports on the left-hand side. These can be connected to your internal network, firewall, switch, or other equipment, depending on your agreed setup.

Backup Connections

If your service includes a backup connection, this will also need to be connected as part of the setup.

Once the primary and backup connections are connected, please contact the Fastnet Support Team so we can test that failover is working correctly.

After the service is live

Once your service is live and testing has been completed by the carrier, our Provisioning Team will send you the service handover details.

If you are unsure which port to use, or if the service does not come online after connecting the equipment, please contact the Fastnet Support Team and we will be happy to assist.
