How to spot phishing emails

Phishing emails are fake or misleading emails designed to trick you into giving away sensitive information, such as passwords, payment details, or account access.

These emails may appear to come from a trusted company, supplier, colleague, or email provider. They often try to create a sense of urgency so that you act quickly without checking carefully first.

Common signs of a phishing email include:

  • Unexpected requests to reset your password or verify your account
  • Poor spelling, grammar, or unusual wording
  • Email addresses that do not match the sender’s name or company
  • Links that do not go to the website they claim to
  • Unexpected attachments
  • Requests for payment, bank details, passwords, or security codes
  • Messages claiming your email account will be closed unless you act immediately
  • Invoices or payment requests you were not expecting

Before clicking a link or opening an attachment, check that the sender is genuine. You can hover over links to see where they point before opening them. If you are unsure, contact the sender using a known phone number or email address rather than replying directly to the suspicious message.

Fastnet will never ask you to send us your email password by email. If we need to help you with your mailbox, we will advise you through our normal support process.

If you receive a suspicious email, do not click any links, open attachments, or enter your login details. If the email relates to a mailbox hosted by Fastnet, please contact the Fastnet Helpdesk and include a copy or screenshot of the message where possible.

If you think you may have entered your password into a suspicious website, change your password immediately and contact the Fastnet Helpdesk so we can advise further.
