Multi-factor authentication, often shortened to MFA, adds an extra layer of security to your account.
Normally, you access an account using a username and password. If someone discovers or guesses your password, they may be able to log in as you. MFA helps prevent this by requiring an additional verification step, such as a code from an authenticator app, a text message, or an approval prompt on your mobile device.
This means that even if your password is compromised, an attacker is much less likely to access your account without the second form of verification.
MFA is especially important for email accounts, remote access systems, Microsoft 365 accounts, VPNs, cloud services, and any system that contains sensitive business information.
Using MFA can help protect against:
- Phishing attacks
- Stolen or reused passwords
- Unauthorised mailbox access
- Business email compromise
- Fraudulent payment requests
- Data loss or account misuse
Where possible, we recommend using an authenticator app rather than SMS text messages, as authenticator apps are generally more secure.
It is also important to keep recovery options up to date, such as backup email addresses, phone numbers, and recovery codes. This helps avoid being locked out if you change phone or lose access to your device.
If you need help enabling MFA on a service hosted or supported by Fastnet, please contact the Fastnet Helpdesk and we will be happy to advise.
