Cyber security is important for businesses of all sizes. Small businesses are often targeted because attackers know they may not have dedicated IT or security teams in place.
Taking some basic steps can significantly reduce the risk of account compromise, data loss, fraud, and disruption.
Use strong, unique passwords for all important accounts. Passwords should not be reused across multiple services. If one account is compromised, reused passwords can allow attackers to access other systems as well.
Enable multi-factor authentication wherever possible, especially for email, Microsoft 365, cloud services, remote access, VPNs, and administrator accounts. MFA adds an extra layer of protection if a password is stolen.
Keep computers, servers, phones, tablets, and applications up to date. Software updates often include important security fixes that protect against known vulnerabilities.
Make sure important data is backed up regularly. Backups should be checked and tested so you know they can be restored if needed. Where possible, keep backups separate from your main systems to help protect against ransomware.
Be cautious with emails, links, and attachments. Phishing emails are one of the most common ways attackers gain access to business accounts. If an email asks you to enter a password, make a payment, change bank details, or open an unexpected attachment, take extra care.
Limit access to systems and data. Staff should only have access to the information and services they need for their role. Administrator access should be restricted and only used when required.
Use reputable antivirus or endpoint protection on business devices. This can help detect and block malicious software, suspicious activity, and unsafe files.
Secure your Wi-Fi with a strong password and modern encryption. Guest Wi-Fi should be kept separate from your main business network where possible.
Have a simple process for reporting suspicious activity. Staff should know who to contact if they receive a suspicious email, lose a device, or notice unusual account behaviour.
Review your suppliers and cloud services regularly. Make sure you know where your data is stored, who has access to it, and how accounts are protected.
Cyber security does not need to be complicated, but it does need to be taken seriously. A few sensible precautions can make a significant difference.
