How to reset an email password

If your email account is hosted through cPanel, you can reset the mailbox password from within the cPanel control panel.

This is useful if a user has forgotten their password, if a member of staff has left the business, or if you believe the mailbox password may have been compromised.

Resetting an email password in cPanel

To reset an email password:

  1. Log in to cPanel using the details provided by Fastnet.
  2. Go to the Email section.
  3. Select Email Accounts.
  4. Find the email address you want to update.
  5. Click Manage next to the mailbox.
  6. Enter a new strong password, or use the password generator if available.
  7. Confirm the change by clicking Update Email Settings or Save, depending on the cPanel version.

Once the password has been changed, any devices or applications using that mailbox will need to be updated with the new password. This may include Outlook, Apple Mail, mobile phones, tablets, and any other email clients.

Choosing a secure password

We recommend using a strong, unique password that is not used for any other service. Avoid using names, company details, common words, or simple patterns.

Where possible, use a long password or passphrase, and store it securely in a password manager.

If you suspect the account has been compromised

If you are resetting the password because you suspect the mailbox has been compromised, we recommend also checking the mailbox for any forwarding rules, filters, or auto-replies that you do not recognise.

You should also review any recent suspicious activity and let relevant staff know to be cautious of unusual emails that may have been sent from the account.

If you need help resetting a cPanel email password, or if you are concerned an account may have been compromised, please contact the Fastnet Helpdesk and we will be happy to assist.
