This guide explains how to connect your Fastnet supplied Cisco leased line router for the first time.
For leased line services, we normally provide a Cisco C1117-4P router. This will be preconfigured before it is sent to you or installed on site.
Your leased line will usually terminate on an NTE provided by the carrier. The NTE is the network termination equipment installed at your premises as part of the leased line service.
Before getting started
Before connecting the router, make sure you have:
- The Fastnet supplied Cisco router
- The router power supply
- The cable provided for your service
- Access to the carrier NTE
- Power available for the router
Your service will usually be presented from the NTE as either:
- RJ45 Ethernet
- Single mode fibre
The correct cable will be supplied depending on how your service is presented.
Connecting an RJ45 Ethernet presentation
If your leased line is presented as RJ45 Ethernet, we will provide the required RJ45 cable.
To connect the router:
- Locate the access port on the carrier NTE.
- Connect one end of the supplied RJ45 cable to the RJ45 access port on the NTE.
- Connect the other end of the RJ45 cable to the correct WAN port on the Cisco router.
- Connect the power supply to the router.
- Switch the router on.
Connecting a fibre presentation
If your leased line is presented as single mode fibre, we will provide the required SFP and fibre cable.
To connect the router:
- Insert the supplied SFP into the correct SFP port on the Cisco router, if it is not already installed.
- Locate the fibre access port on the carrier NTE.
- Connect one end of the supplied fibre cable to the fibre port on the NTE.
- Connect the other end of the fibre cable to the SFP in the Cisco router.
- Connect the power supply to the router.
- Switch the router on.
Please take care when handling fibre cables. Avoid bending the cable sharply and do not look directly into the end of a fibre cable or optic.
After the router is connected
Once the router has been connected and powered on, please contact the Fastnet Helpdesk.
We will check that the leased line is online, confirm we can remotely access the router, and complete any required testing.
If your service includes a backup connection, we can also test that failover is working correctly.
If the service does not come online
If the leased line does not appear to come online, please check the following:
- The Cisco router is powered on.
- The cable is connected to the correct access port on the NTE. You can connect your network or firewall to any of the 4 LAN ports on the Cisco router. If you have requested specific VLANs per port, these will have been configured based on your requirements.
- The cable is connected to the correct WAN port on the Cisco router.
- The NTE has power.
- Any service or link lights on the NTE are showing as expected.
- The supplied SFP is installed correctly, if your service is fibre-presented.
- The fibre cable is securely connected and has not been sharply bent.
If the service still does not come online, please contact the Fastnet Helpdesk and provide your company name, site address, service reference if known, and a description of the lights showing on both the NTE and Cisco router.
